Upgrade your "source." All CD players are not equal, and they only sound as good as the DAC (digital analog converter) within them. Most CD players have a coax digital output on them, and you can purchase an outboard DAC to process the signal. That would make your CD player just a "transport" and the DAC would "make" the music. Almost all outboard DAC's are better than the stock units, unless you have a $2,000 CD player.

New cables. The sound is only as good as the weakest link. If you are using the stock $0.50 cables, you are missing some of the benefits of your expensive preamp, CD player, amplifiers.

Subwoofer. An active subwoofer will allow you to pheel phil in all his glory.

Dome tweeters. Most speakers today have them, but if you have older speakers, you are missing the sparkling "tiss tiss tiss" that Bill and Mickey add to the songs with their cymbals.

Amplifier. Speakers get blown from not having enough power, not too much. When an amp clips, it can send nasty stuff out to your speakers.

WAF: wife approval factor! Keep them in the loop with your desires and wishes. You can't have a room with a mega wall of electronics, they may find it unsightly. Work with them on how to get everything just right. Maybe you can convert a closet to a stereo cabinet (hopefully with rear access), in wall speakers and wiring, low profile components, make the audio room a home theater so they can enjoy their movies.

With research, and some DIY capability, it doesn't all need to be expensive.
